Strumpet City Project 2013
Graphic Gallery themed their exhibition around the idea of Dublin City past and present to tie in with the nomination of the novel “Strumpet City” by James Plunkett as the One City One Book for 2013. The exhibition was conceived by Gerry Cox, Lisa Dunne and Dermot Ryan as a fundraiser for Graphic Studio Dublin.
I chose linocut as the medium most suited in my opinion to represent two maps of inner city Dublin. The prints ‘Take up your Cross and follow Me’ and ‘I sometimes despair of this city of ours’ are linocuts with letterpress mounted on Japanese paper. I created two prints in an edition of 15.They are maps based on two different locations in the north inner city where a lot of the narrative in the book takes place and where the hospitals, prisons and asylums were then situated.
There were almost fifty artists involved, including:
Yoko Akino | Gavin Hogg | Ruth O’Donnell |
Anne Anderson | Siobhan Hyde | Ciara O’Hara |
Paul Bailey | Brian Lalor | Gay O’Neill |
Margaret Becker | Jennifer Lane | Mary Plunkett |
Carmel Benson | Sharon Lee | Sarah Rogers |
Gerard Cox | Louise Leonard | Suzannah O’Reilly |
